You can take the man out of I.T., but you can’t seem to take the I.T. out of the man. I got drafted into a massive programming project at work. Then, I got drafted into handling the web site set up (and probably long term admin as well) for the local Dems. This weekend I’m running power from the basement to the attic for 2nd floor overhead lights. While the wall is open, I might as well run some CAT5, too…
Do we ever change? All I want to do is work on my farm, clear some land, run some fence, fix up the old barn, etc. Yet, here I am putting in tons of OT on IT. It must seem like old times for Cath, too. At least the OT is mostly from the house. Still, its a little disconcerting to find your big life change has resulted mostly in a zip code change. I mean, I could stare at a monitor anywhere. I guess the old Buckaroo Banzai saying is true, “Wherever you go, there you are.”
This is not to say that I’m not having a blast. I haven’t gotten to code anything cool in a long time and I got into programming to do things like this- make my life easier, better living through technology and all that. The last several years I was just installing mail servers since all the programming I was qualified for had gone to India. or simply evaporated in the wake of the dot.com bust. It’s a ton of fun, but I’d still rather have time to cut some firewood and play soccer with my kids.
Moral of the story: Your life story does not end and your past will follow you when you make the big Urban to Rural transition. You will bring things with you. Sometimes its baggage, sometimes its knowledge of how to barehand ASP pages on a shoestring budget.
